City Approves Contract with Firefighters

Topeka's governing body on Tuesday evening approved a three-year contract with the city's rank-and-file firefighters.

Governing body members voted 10-0 to enter into the employment contract for 2016 through 2018 with Topeka firefighters represented in collective bargaining by the International Association of Fire Fighters. The firefighters involved had already voted to accept the contract, which will provide them across-the-board pay increases of 1 percent in 2016 and 1.25 percent each in 2017 and 2018.

Governing body members also:

- Voted 10-0 to approve an update of the city's North Topeka West Neighborhood Plan, which includes prioritizing improvements to be made to the area using funding from the city's Stages of Resources Targeting program.

- Voted 10-0 to authorize Shawnee County to build a parking lot on property the county plans to buy from William and Angelia Rahberg at the southeast corner of S.W. 2nd and MacVicar Avenue to serve as the future home of the county's primary health clinic, which is to be located just to the west at 2600 S. …
