Delegate Tom Fast, R-Fayette, thinks President Obama is a covert Muslim and Fast once declared that Obama gives secret hand signals to fellow Muslims during public appearances. Goofy notions like this are enough to spawn a thousand jokes about West Virginia on late-night TV shows. Prejudiced politicians like Fast embarrass the Mountain State.

As if that is not enough, last year, Fast sponsored a bill forbidding local cities or counties to pass any laws protecting gays from discrimination. His bill failed, and now eight municipalities have taken the compassionate step. They are Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, Lewisburg, Martinsburg, Athens, Harpers Ferry and tiny Thurmond. We hope every city in the state follows suit.

Fast also championed an attempt to let Uber do-it-yourself taxi drivers refuse to pick up gays. This stumbling block caused the Legislature to delay, temporarily preventing the Uber system from operating in West Virginia.

In 2009, a New York Times report described how Fast tried to prevent a Fayette County lesbian couple from adopting a child. …
