Dozens of Passaic County judiciary employees and county officials gathered Wednesday to celebrate Black History Month, with a Paterson native and motivational speaker urging them to strive to succeed.

The annual event, organized by the county judiciary and held at the freeholders meeting room in the county administration building in Paterson, was kicked off by Chanda Curtis, the equal employment and affirmative action officer for the county judiciary, who hosted a trivia game on sites of African-American memories and handed awards to the winners.

She was followed by Yvonne Harvey Williams, a Paterson native who now lives in Georgia and is the founder and CEO of Speak2Inspire LLC, a training and consulting firm.

In an emphatic speech, Williams told the audience that her mother dropped out of 8th grade at age 14 to give birth to her. …
