Budget Adds Would Set Tax Hike at 6.1%

PATERSON -- The City Council is to vote next week on eight pages of budget changes that would set Paterson's 2016 tax increase at 6.1 percent.

The council on Tuesday night decided to move ahead on the budget amendments with few questions and little discussion, a dramatic contrast to the scene last week when four council members opposed a temporary budget, putting city employees' paychecks in jeopardy.

Under the amendments, Paterson's total 2016 budget would be $275.8 million, with $157.3 million of that money coming from municipal property taxes. In 2015, the city's total budget had been $256.6 million and its tax levy was $148.2 million.

Mayor Joey Torres' staff in the past week reduced what had been a 7 percent tax increase by cutting $2.5 million from the levy.

Those savings were achieved through the use of capital surplus, officials said. …
