Walter Marusyn, who created Fairleigh Dickinson University's indoor and outdoor track and field programs, has died in California. He was 92 and a former resident of North Arlington.

An award bearing his name is presented annually to FDU's most outstanding male student-athlete.

As a cross-country and track and field coach, Mr. Marusyn led the Knights to many conference championships.

His high point was in 1978 when his men's cross-country team compiled a 10-1 dual meet record, defeating such schools as Princeton, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Yale, and placed second in the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championship.

He was the New Jersey Track and Field Association's Coach of the Year in 1978. …
