AFORMER MP and council leader has launched a bid to take back his place in Stockport town hall.

Lib Dem Mark Hunter, who lost his Cheadle seat to the Tories at last May's General Election, is planning a return to the council following the death of member Lenny Grice last month.

The Cheadle Hulme South councillor, 63, from Bramhall, died after suffering a stroke in January. Mr Hunter, 58, who served as Cheadle MP for a decade between 2005 and 2015, hopes to hold on to the seat for the Lib Dems at May's local elections.

He said: "For 10 years I had the privilege of representing the people of Cheadle Hulme in Parliament.

"At a time when the Conservative government is cutting funding to local councils as never before, the need to have elected representatives who will fight for local people is greater than ever.

"I believe I have the experience, energy and passion to deliver for Cheadle Hulme on the council."

Mr Hunter was deposed by Tory Mary Robinson last year - losing by 6,500 votes - as the national Lib Dem wipe-out claimed another victim. …
