Kurdish Dilemma the U.S. Could Hurt Turkey If It's Not Careful

As conflicts between the Turks and Kurds heat up, the United States risks bringing to Turkey, its NATO ally, the kind of chaos that prevails in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria.

An attack Wednesday on a Turkish military convoy in Ankara killed at least 28 and wounded dozens. Turkey blamed it on the armed wing of the Syrian-Kurdish Democratic Union Party, the PYD. It is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has fought the Turkish government for 40 years, and it seeks an independent Kurdish state.

The PYD has not claimed responsibility, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed retribution. Turkey is bombing PYD- controlled areas of Syria near the Turkish border, and it could follow with a ground incursion. If he does not respond strongly to the Ankara attack, Mr. Erdogan could put the future of his government at risk. …
