Firefighters Rescue Animals | They Were about to Wrap Up at a Nearby Blaze When the Call Came

SARASOTA

SARASOTA COUNTY -- Sarasota County firefighters who were wrapping up a blaze on School Avenue Thursday were able to break away and rescue four pets at a residence less than two miles away.

Battalion Chief Travis Dagenais said an overheated water heater started a fire at 3707 School Ave. on Thursday, in one of the first floor units at Sunland Gardens apartments.

"We had flames and smoke upon arrival," he said. "We did an interior attack, and established there were no people inside the unit."

Dagenais said the occupants of the apartment were able to escape unharmed but it had not been determined if they would be able to return to the apartment.

The battalion chief was one of several firefighters at Sunland Gardens who were allowed to immediately respond to a fire at 3214 N. …
