Topeka House Fire Friday Started in Grass at Corner of Gage and Mission Does $28K in Damage

A man escaped unharmed from what fire officials are calling an accidential house fire Friday morning at the corner of S.W. Gage and Mission Court that did about $28,000 in damage.

The fire, reported at the brown-colored single-story home at 11:05 a.m. at 3900 S.W. Mission Court, did major damage to a home, Topeka fire officials said.

A resident, who didn't want his name used, was visibly traumatized following the blaze with tears in his eyes. Homeowner Mike Corber tried to comfort him.

"Stuff can be replaced," he told the man.

Battalion Chief Kelly Adams said the fire started in the grass in the backyard and spread to the back of the home and the attic quickly before it was contained.

Topeka fire officials in a news release said the cause was accidental and more likely than not associated with the improper disposal of smoking materials. …
