Officer in 'Crisis' Rescued in Search

MAHWAH - Police spent five hours Thursday night searching Campgaw Mountain for a Weehawken police officer who was thought to be suicidal, police said.

Patrick Cannon, 42, of Rochelle Park was located at midnight and taken by medevac helicopter to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Friday, according to Weehawken Deputy Chief Jeffrey Fulcher.

"Last night in Mahwah ... Sergeant Cannon, during a time of emotional crisis, attempted to do harm to himself and was found and rescued by officers from numerous agencies," Fulcher said.

At about 7:30 p.m., a friend of Cannon's called police to report that Cannon had ingested Tylenol PM, aspirin and Nyquil, "that type of cocktail," said Bergen County Police Lt. Mike Devine.

Police immediately began tracking pings from Cannon's cellphone. His car was located in a camping area at Campgaw Mountain, and officers set off with flashlights to search the county park.

About 40 officers, and three police dogs from Mahwah, Bergen County and the New Jersey State Police, along with the Rockland County Sheriff's Office of New York, sloshed through the muddy trails adjacent to the ski area. …
