JOSE Mourinho believes he has a gentleman's agreement with Ed Woodward to become the next United manager.

The ex-Chelsea boss is yet to sign a pre-contract deal with the Reds, however M.E.N. Sport understands the Portuguese believes he will replace Louis van Gaal. Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes would prefer his client to take over this season, but Woodward remains resistant to sacking Van Gaal before the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson named David Moyes as his successor over Mourinho and would prefer Ryan Giggs to replace Van Gaal, yet Ferguson's position on United's football board is, as fellow member David Gill clarified last month, 'more of an ambassadorial role'.

Woodward contacted Mendes just hours after United's humiliating Europa League defeat to Midtjylland on Friday to seek assurances that Mourinho's stance on succeeding Van Gaal had not changed. …
