EPA Could Tighten Pollution Limits at Ameren's Largest Plant

Ameren Missouri could be forced to install more pollution equipment on the state's largest coal plant if the Environmental Protection Agency finalizes plans that would require improvements in air quality.

The EPA said Wednesday it intended to designate a portion of St. Charles and Franklin counties surrounding Ameren's Labadie plant as an area exceeding federal limits on sulfur dioxide.

The pollutant, a byproduct of coal combustion, exacerbates respiratory conditions such as asthma and also helps form fine particles associated with cardiopulmonary problems.

Missouri Department of Natural Resources modeling suggested the area exceeded federal sulfur dioxide limits, but last year the DNR recommended telling the EPA the area was unclassifiable. …
