Tulsa Port of Catoosa Shipments Drop

CATOOSA - Total barge tonnage through the Tulsa Port of Catoosa in January was 112,594 tons, down from 147,723 tons in December and 202,761 tons in January 2015.

Excessive rains at the end of 2015 caused some of the reduced activity.

"The backlog of freight movement was immense, and we are still dealing with the ripple effects logistically," said Jay Boucher, manager of Gavilon Grain.

Inbound shipments of dry fertilizer were lower during the month. Outbound shipments of wheat were lower than in the previous month as other transportation modes picked up the slack caused by the waterway slowdown.

Outbound shipments of soybeans and soy products were also slightly lower than during December.

"Despite the lower numbers to start the year, we are bullish on increased port activity throughout the remainder of the year, especially when the main dock fully reopens in early spring," said Chip McElroy, chairman of the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority. …
