Severe storms are likely in the Tuscaloosa area Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service in Birmingham forecast Monday afternoon.

The lion's share of Tuscaloosa County is being classified by the National Weather Service as an area of "elevated" threat, in which tornadoes, hail and damaging winds as high as 70 miles per hour are possible from Tuesday afternoon until early Wednesday morning. The southern tip of Tuscaloosa County falls into the area of "significant" threat, where predictions include strong tornadoes and hail the size of golf balls.

The National Weather Service said Monday afternoon that the southern half of the state is most threatened by the storm system. Forecasters emphasized, though, that all of central Alabama, including Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, should also be prepared to take action in case of severe weather watches or warnings. …
