* Tree removal on the Baptist Home property above Castle Shannon Boulevard has prompted at least one neighbor of the property to ask a commissioner to investigate the work.

Baptist Home President Todd Swortzel said the home contracted a service to remove trees on the five-acre campus that could be considered a threat.

Swortzel said two houses adjacent to the Baptist Home have been damaged by falling branches in the past three months.

But neighbor Larry Zalewski thinks the tree service went too far, cutting down healthy trees among those that were considered to be dangerous because of rot and other diseases.

"Upon inspection, it appeared that older, healthy trees were cut down," Zalewski said.

"You don't have to be a tree expert to look at a stump and tell it was a healthy tree," he said.

Swortzel said the issue was the potential danger to buildings and people, including children who participate in the home's intergenerational program and walk the trails through the woods.

"Some of the trees were probably healthy but had the potential to fall onto people's homes," Swortzel said.

But Zalewski said he was concerned that the tree-cutting would adversely affect property values.

Zalewski asked Commissioner Dale Colby to look into the matter.

The decision would be made in consideration of the child's academic performance, age, physical growth, social and emotional makeup, parent and student input and other data. …
