The West Allegheny and Carlynton school districts will start the new year with interim superintendents.

Charles Fazekas, director of educational services at West Allegheny, has been appointed interim superintendent, effective Saturday.

Fazekas will serve as chief administrator until a permanent replacement is hired for Superintendent Charles Hughey, who is retiring next month. He was appointed Dec. 22.

As the director of educational services, Fazekas has been second highest ranking administrator since Hughey became superintendent in 1997. Fazekas had been McKee Elementary School principal since 1972.

Hughey will continue working for the district as a consultant, initially to Fazekas and eventually to the permanent superintendent.

School director Bill Gamble, personnel committee chairman, said a search was under way for Hughey's successor. …
