Goodwill, Summerdale Undecided about Appeal

Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh and Summerdale Courts Inc. have not decided whether they will appeal a decision by Clairton council that blocked their plans to build an apartment building for the mentally challenged.

Last week, council unanimously rejected a zoning change developers need to build the eight-unit apartment building at the end of Tamarack Drive.

"We are going to look at all our legal options, but it's the desire of my client to work with the community as a partner," said attorney Michael Miller, representing Goodwill and Summerdale Courts, a nonprofit organization.

Clairton Solicitor Dan Beisler said Goodwill and Summerdale have 45 days from last Wednesday's council meeting to either resubmit an application addressing concerns from the city, or file an appeal in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.

Summerdale Courts, developer in the joint project with Goodwill, was seeking a special exception from council to build on a site zoned for single-family residential or family-dwelling apartments. …
