I was heartened to read of Gov. Tom Wolf's proposal for measures to address methane pollution from the oil and gas industry and to hear that the Department of Environmental Protection is already moving the proposal along ("DEP Tackles Upgrading Rules for Methane," Feb. 16).The harmful consequences of natural gas drilling such as compromised air and water quality are real, and Pennsylvanians in the region and beyond are suffering as a result. Being an asthmatic, I know that these consequences are very real.As DEP Secretary John Quigley rightly stated, "We cannot sit back and wait for voluntary compliance because it's not happening."

The better option would be to keep fossil fuels in the ground and not risk the negative impacts to public health and the environment. I'm proud to be working alongside fellow University of Pittsburgh students on a fossil fuel divestment campaign that will be presenting to a group of trustees on Feb. …
