Donut Connection Marks Eighth Anniversary on Spring Street, Charleston, ; in March

Article excerpt

Donut Connection on Spring Street in Charleston is marking a milestone in March: its eighth anniversary in baking, bustling business. Charleston husband and wife Shannon and Katie Kinder opened Donut Connection on March 1, 2008. As a teenager, Katie had worked at the Donut Connection location in Kanawha City. When she and Shannon were pondering starting their own business a year or so after getting married, Katie's father suggested they open a West Side Donut Connection location. The property of a vacant home at the corner of Spring Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was available for them to purchase. So they did.

And the rest is sweet history.

Along with more than 40 flavors of freshly prepared doughnuts in stock morning, noon and night, Donut Connection can please the palate with breakfast croissants (as is, or complemented by sausage, bacon, ham and cheese, to name a few); bagels; brownies; cookies; muffins; apple fritters; cinnamon rolls; ice cream and much more.

Donut Connection coffee is pretty much a customer "must on most visits, too, and the Kinders have expanded the beverage line over time with espresso drinks (single and double shots), hot and iced lattes, cappuccinos and teas.

"We just started doing fresh-brewed, iced tea, said Katie. "I'm sure that'll pick up when the weather starts getting warm. We do fresh brewed with flavors; we've got mango, peach, blackberry and raspberry teas. We do have hot tea, also -- that's new for this year.

Other recent additions to the Donut Connection menu are a Mountain State favorite: pepperoni rolls. "We get homemade pepperoni rolls from Home Industry Bakery in Clarksburg, delivered to us twice a week, Katie said.

"We try to add more to our menu as the years have gone on, she noted. "Since the first year, we've learned a lot about the business. Throughout the years, we've been able to add more and more that our customers seem to really like.

March will also mark the return of a customer favorite: green doughnuts. …
