The Gop Wants to Compound the Dysfunction

As usual with Republican legislators, Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley used loaded language rather than reason in their commentary "Picking the Next Justice: Let Voters Weigh In on Filling Scalia's Seat" (Feb. 21).

In calling President Barack Obama a "lame-duck president" they misuse a term that indicates that the president is in his last days in office after his successor has been elected or at least very close to the end of his term. This particular term has 11 months to go.

By Republican-obstruction reasoning we should just shut down the entire legislative process, which includes signing of bills by presidents in the last year of a term.

This reasoning is consistent with what went on when Republicans shut down the government in 2013. …
