PATERSON - With block after block of massive potholes, West Railway Avenue in the area known as South Paterson is a wheel alignment mechanic's dream - and a nightmare for businesses and drivers.

"I lose a lot of customers because people don't want to drive here," said Carmilo Nunez, part-owner of C&J Distributors on West Railway.

There's little question that the craters in the pavement rank the road among the worst in Paterson. Still, West Railway didn't make Mayor Joey Torres' list of 170 primary streets that would be repaired under a $37 million resurfacing plan.

That omission has prompted complaints from Councilman Andre Sayegh, who represents the 6th Ward, where West Railway is located.

Sayegh said the condition of West Railway is so bad that traffic jams occur on Getty Avenue, which runs parallel to it, because drivers are desperate to avoid the craters. …
