Both Community College of Allegheny County South and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank should be commended for opening a food pantry on campus after CCAC identified the food insecurity experienced by some of its students ("Food for Thought: CCAC South Addresses an Unusual Student Need," Feb. 20 editorial). This fix, however, may address only the tip of the iceberg.

As a dietitian with extensive public health experience, I know that adults with difficulty consistently accessing enough food to meet basic needs may also face challenges paying for utilities, rent, health care and more. These obstacles may derail the pursuit of higher education and consequently decrease the chance of finding future work that provides a living wage.

As a society, I believe we want to encourage, not discourage, both traditional and nontraditional students in obtaining a college degree. …
