The artificial turf at Chartiers Valley High School football stadium will need to be replaced soon, and the school board is trying to decide whether to keep the same type of turf amid reports about possible health concerns.

At the request of superintendent Brian White, the board watched a video from ESPN's "E:60" show about potential health concerns with the crumb rubber infill used in artificial turf fields, including Chartier Valley's.

That infill is made from recycled tires and, according to the video, contains up to 27 chemicals and 11 known carcinogens.

After the video, board President Tony Mazzarini said the board faces a challenge with choosing a type of field because "we have to make a decision in a reasonable time frame. …
