Teaneck's Former Prosecutor Wants Old Job

Article excerpt

TEANECK -- The township's former municipal prosecutor, who left her position at the end of last year, wants her job back, according to a letter from her attorney.

The letter, written by Neil Mullin and sent to Township Attorney William Rupp this month, alleges that the township forced the prosecutor, Deborah Veach, to leave the position. This move, Mullin wrote, violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination because Teaneck did not accommodate her medical disability.

Veach, a former councilwoman, is seeking immediate reinstatement to her former position, which she held for 10 years. Her term was set to expire in June.

Mullin's letter states that at the beginning of May last year, Veach told Stanley Turitz, also a township attorney, that she had severe, recurrent back pain and needed an alternate prosecutor to cover for her while she sought medical attention.

The letter alleges that Teaneck refused to appoint alternative prosecutors -- though the issue had been raised before -- and says that Veach hired an alternative at her own expense.

In August, the township issued its first request for proposals for municipal prosecutors. Veach, "deeply humiliated by the township's shocking action," submitted a letter of resignation in an attempt "to save face," the letter states.

In an interview, Mullin said that the letter, which The Record obtained through a public-records request, contained medical information about his client that the township should have redacted. He said that the township violated her privacy.

"It's wrong, it's shocking, it's retaliatory, it's not constructive," Mullin said.

Rupp, the township attorney, said he could not comment on the contents of the letter because it pertains to pending litigation, but noted that the council is aware of it. He said that he had nothing to redact in the letter, a public document. …
