Seeing Is Believing as Yi Captures Gold

MANTUA TOWNSHIP - Harrison Yi wasn't sure whether or not he won the race until he got to the medal stand to accept the gold.

The Tenafly senior won the B relay in the 100-yard freestyle at the state swimming Meet of Champions, but had to squint to see the scoreboard across the room that showed that he came in first. But without his glasses, he couldn't tell for certain.

"I thought I saw the one next to my name because my name is shorter than everyone else's," Yi joked. "So I sort of knew I won. They line you up in the order that you placed. I knew that the fourth person is the winner of the heat so then I knew that I won."

It was one of the lighter moments on a day that saw several North Jersey athletes stand out among the state's fastest swimmers. Jason Arthur won a pair of events for Teaneck while Wayne Valley's Zach Valenzuela finished not too far behind him in fourth in the 200- yard individual medley. …
