New Gear to Safeguard First-Aiders

WANAQUE -- The Wanaque First Aid Squad, equipped to deal with injury to others, now has a new tool designed to prevent injury to its own members.

Thanks to a pair of power lift stretchers purchased by the borough -- one for each of the squad's ambulances -- the job of moving patients has become considerably less strenuous.

"They're terrific," longtime squad member Karen Cisco said of the new gear. "It makes a world of difference -- just being able to push a button and lift a person up."

Built by the Stryker Corp. of Michigan, the stretchers are designed to protect first responders and the people they transport by providing a smooth ride inside and outside the ambulance. Using hydraulic power, the stretchers not only go up and down, they are guided in and out of the ambulance on a special rail. …
