Pair Allegedly Gave Injections of Botox at Totowa Beauty Salon

A Totowa couple were arrested Monday and charged with administering Botox injections in a beauty salon they operated in the borough, authorities said.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Totowa Police Chief Robert W. Coyle said that Carla Haro, 45, and her husband, Joe Haro, 52, were arrested after an investigation, which is continuing.

Carla Haro, who also is known Giovanna Garay, is charged with practicing medicine without a license and possession of a prescription drug. She and her husband are both charged with conspiracy to practice medicine.

Botox, manufactured by the pharmaceutical firm Allergan, is a form of botulinum toxin A, which is one of the most lethal bacterial toxins known.

The company that produces Botox says in literature accompanying the product that "there has not been a confirmed serious case" of migration of the drug from its injection site when it has been "used at the recommended dose to treat frown lines or crow's feet lines. …
