PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Outfielder Curtis Granderson left the complex early Monday with what the team feared may be pinkeye. Granderson was in the clubhouse during its first open period from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Manager Terry Collins said Granderson's eye has bothered him since Sunday.

"Pinkeye can be very contagious. We sent him to the eye doctor to see what it was," Collins said.

Collins said he doesn't believe the doctor visit will reveal a serious issue. The team could take precautions if Granderson is diagnosed with the ailment.

RELIEVER'S AUDITION: Josh Smoker first attended a major league spring training in 2008 after being drafted by the Nationals in the first round of the previous year's draft.

Eight years later, following two shoulder surgeries and a stint in independent ball, Smoker is back.
