Prisoners in the Swissvale lockup may not know it, but they're on the air.

About six weeks ago, the borough purchased a closed-circuit video system and had nine cameras installed in and around the municipal center on Noble Street.

Assistant Chief Greg Geppert said a camera is trained on each of three jail cells the borough uses to hold prisoners.

The camera system also covers the interrogation room and the entrances to the police station and municipal offices, borough Manager Warren Cecconi said.

A borough council agenda dated Oct. 6 says that the system was purchased from a company called Pro-Tech at a cost of $9,950.

Police Chief Dominic Nuzzo said he asked for the cameras with improving security around the municipal building in mind.

"It offers better protection for prisoners in the cells," he said, adding that officers can view a monitor in the office as they fill out paperwork. …
