FIRST-DEGREE MURDER

NORTH PORT -- A grand jury has indicted Joseph Walsh, the father of Chance Walsh, on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his 7-week-old son.

The indictment came back after the grand jury met Tuesday morning. In Florida, a first-degree murder charge can only be brought forth by a grand jury indictment.

If Walsh is convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty because the case did not meet statutory criteria, Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O'Donnell said.

Walsh is accused of beating and choking Chance at his family's home in Warm Mineral Springs on the morning of Sept. 16. According to Walsh's wife, Kristen Bury, Chance died hours later. Neither parent called for help.

The infant's body allegedly decomposed inside the house for several days until his parents borrowed a friend's car and used a broken shovel to bury the body in a remote area of eastern North Port. …
