1916 Village a Rock Amid War

The village of Douaumont continues to be the storm centre of the Verdun battle and the rock against which the German tide has been repeatedly broken. The Germans, after the inevitable heavy bombardment, resumed their infantry attacks late on Thursday evening. Again and again they advanced to the assault only to be flung back with cruel loss, but a final rush carried them into the village. This success is largely countered by the French communique issued last night, which states that the higher part of the hillock on which the ruined hamlet stands is still held, and that a splendid charge regained some ground in the immediate neighborhood of the village. …
