European Crisis Nations Reach the Breaking Point on Migrants

The migration problem in Europe, the Middle East and Africa has reached tragic proportions in political and humanitarian terms.

Thousand of migrants have fled to Europe from the war-shattered countries of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as well as underdeveloped countries of Africa.Many are young men, of varied motives, but others are helpless women, children and old people. Some are economic migrants; others are terrified fugitives from war.

The European states have been coping with the influx to varying degrees. Germany has been the most generous, having accepted at least a million newcomers. Smaller countries, alarmed by the difficulty of absorbing the mostly Muslim, unskilled, needy migrants, have been less enthusiastic.

Greece, which has been the first European Union stop for many on the exodus, is heavily burdened. …
