Mccandless Child-Drowning Case May Be near Resolution

The case against a McCandless mother accused of drowning her two sons nearly two years ago could be resolved in May.

Laurel Schlemmer, 42, appeared Tuesday morning before Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning for a status conference. During the hearing, assistant district attorney Lisa Pellegrini said that she had received a report from a defense expert regarding Ms. Schlemmer's mental health, and her prosecution expert should have his report to her by the end of April.

Judge Manning set the next court date for May 5, at which time the case could go to trial or end in a plea agreement.

The two sides have been discussing a possible plea for several months. Defense attorney Michael Machen is expected to file a notice of a diminished capacity or mental infirmity defense next week.
