Topeka Symphony Youth Ensembles Violinists to Do Some Fiddling

Audiences will hear some fiddling along with violin playing Sunday afternoon when the Topeka Symphony Orchestra Youth Ensembles present their spring concert.

The 3 p.m. Sunday program in White Concert Hall on the campus of Washburn University will feature sets by players of, in ascending order of age and skill level, the Debut Orchestra, conducted by Carolyn Sandquist; the Youth Philharmonic, under the direction of Carolyn Rich Voth; and the Youth Orchestra, directed by David Barg.

The Debut Orchestra's repertoire will include "Red Pepper," a composition by Jeffrey Bishop based on traditional Zydeco and Cajun fiddling styles. Other works include "Once Upon a December," the Golden Globe Award-winning song from the 1997 animated feature film "Anastasia," and Richard Meyer's "Dragonhunter," a medieval- sounding work in which the basses and cellos play the part of the dragon being chased by the violins and violas.

The Youth Philharmonic string players also will do a little fiddling when they perform the Americana classic "Orange Blossom Special," which has been called the fiddle player's national anthem. …
