Nearly 14,000 customers across the state were left without power Tuesday night. More than a dozen counties between Jackson and McDowell were affected by widespread outages. Just after 9 p.m., Kanawha County was hit the hardest, with more than 4,000 outages. Jackson County had roughly 2,200 outages reported at that time.

Lincoln, Wayne and Wyoming counties each had more than 1,000 customers without power.

Appalachian Power spokesman Phil Moye said Tuesday night that most of the outages occurred within a half-hour period shortly before 9 p.m.

"It's very likely the high wind gusts we had contributed to many of these outages, Moye said.

He added that first responder crews would be working to pinpoint the cause of the outages Tuesday night, but couldn't say when power would be restored to affected customers. …
