CRUMBS... Manchester's Toast Rack will be given a futuristic makeover under plans to turn it into housing.

The iconic building, fondly remembered by generations of Manchester Metropolitan University students, is on course to be turned into an ultramodern development. These artist impressions show how the Brutalist concrete masterpiece could be turned into futuristic living space, complete with gym, artisan coffee shop and a glass-covered winter garden.

Long admired by fans of Sixties architecture, the proposals will see two new building - known as The Stitching Block and The Gateway building, created alongside the Fallowfield campus structure.

Between them, they will boast 210 flats of between one and four bedrooms There will also be a spacious gym and leisure centre, plus 7,000 sq ft of retail spaces including 'co-working spaces' for use by residents and the public. …
