A winner in Las Vegas

West Allegheny grad Ron Tarquinio, a junior on the Pitt wrestling team, went 5-0 at last weekend's two-day Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to capture the 141-pound championship.

He won his first three matches by scores of 6-0, 8-0 and 4-0. Tarquinio then defeated Matt Murray of Nebraska in the semifinals, 3- 2, and topped Richard LaForge of Hofstra in the finals, 6-3. For the season, Tarquinio is 13-2.

At Delaware

Ellwood City grad Sonny Riccio, a junior quarterback on the University of Delaware football team, completed 24 of 41 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns last Saturday in a 44-38 loss at William & Mary in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. For the season, Riccio completed 259 of 443 passes for 2,698 yards.

Player of the Week

Ambridge High grad Callie Iorfido, a junior at Edinboro University, was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division Co-Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

A 5-5 guard, she led the Fighting Scots (5-1) to a 3-0 week. In an 88-78 win over Merchurst last Wednesday, Iorfido had a school- record tying 16 assists. On Saturday, in an 85-80 win over Mansfield, she had a career-high 17 points and handed out 11 assists. She ended the week by grabbing a career-high nine rebounds on Sunday in a 78-52 triumph over East Stroudsburg. Iorfido also had eight points and six assists in that game. For the season, Iorfido is averaging 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds a game and a team- best and PSAC-best 9.1 assists a game.

Men's college basketball

Center High grad Jim Deep, a sophomore guard at Division III Bethany College, was averaging 13.5 points a game heading into last night's play. After six games, the Bison were 4-2.

Sto-Rox grad Ed Peterson, a 6-2 junior guard at Division II Indiana University of Pa., is averaging 10.3 points a game and leads the Indians (7-2) in steals with 20.

Hopewell grad Matt Majzlik, a 6-5 junior forward at Division III Allegheny College, is averaging a team-best 14.8 points a game. The Gators are 2-4.

Ellwood City grad Stefan Grundberg, a 6-5 senior at Geneva College, was averaging 17. …
