Racing Top Sport for Ea Alumnus Cain Driving for Finish in Street Stocks Top Five

Article excerpt

John Cain has always enjoyed just one sport.

When other kids at East Allegheny High School in the mid-1990s were playing basketball or football or running track, Cain was running engines.

Cain graduated from high school in 1996 and now lives in the Elizabeth Township community of Buena Vista. His passion for racing, however, has not changed since he left school.

"I was looking for something to do in high school, and I always liked cars," said Cain, 26. "Racing was the only sport I ever liked. I just think racing is a lot of run. I like going fast."

Cain has been doing just that in this, his fifth season as a local dirt track driver. He began his career running mostly at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial in the amateur stocks division. He had some success there, winning a number of trophies in a division that has no seasonal points standings. Amateur stocks are, for the most part, for beginners.

Last season, Cain made the move to the street stocks division and performed reasonably well. He finished ninth in the division's points chase, not bad for a rookie in the division.

"I think we've gotten better every year," Cain said. "The last couple of years, I've been learning and trying to do the best I can. I can tell you racing is a lot different than driving on the street.

"But I had to learn about how to drive the car, where to be [on the track] and how the cars work. I listened to a bunch of different people and tried to do a bunch of different things. I've tried to take a little bit from everyone and put it together. Then we just tried to keep getting better and better every time out."

This season, the plan really is beginning to work. Cain won the first feature race of his career earlier this season and has had several top-five finishes. He still is a long shot to win the points race, but with most of two months left in the racing season, has a chance for a top-five finish. …
