Green Is Good as Gold Playing for the Rock

Article excerpt

At Slippery Rock University, Avonworth High graduate Stacey Green continues to climb the charts.

A 5-foot-11 senior forward, Green is third in SRU women's basketball history in rebounding, with 778. She is 11th in career scoring at the school with 1,118 points.

Green has a shot at ending up as the school's career rebounding leader. Kory Fielitz (1990-94) holds the record with 961.

But Green said it's a good win-loss record, not rebounding or scoring records, that she's after as a senior.

Slippery Rock, a member of the 14-team Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, went 15-12 her freshman year, but plummeted to a 9-17 mark her sophomore season and 13-14 last year. The PSAC has some very good teams, including California (Pa.), the defending NCAA Division II national champions. Still, The Rock has high hopes.

"We want to have a winning season, make the [conference] playoffs and keep on going," said Green, 22, who's interested in a career in nursing. "I feel pretty good about us this year."

Slippery Rock is off to a 4-3 start with Green leading The Rock in both scoring (14.0 a game) and rebounding (9.0 a game). She was named MVP of the Town Places Suites Tip-Off Tournament several weeks ago, when she tallied 19 points, 17 rebounds in a 65-52 win against Tiffin in the tournament's championship game.

One of SRU's other top players, 6-2 senior center Erin Frankovich (11.1 points, 7.0 rebounds a game), is also a senior.

"With the seniors, this is it. There's a sense of urgency to get it done," said Slippery Rock coach Laurel Heilman. "The clock is ticking. They know that. They do everything they can."

This is Heilman's fourth year as SRU's head coach, meaning Green was one of her first recruits.

"Stacey's work ethic and drive to do well are her biggest attributes," said Heilman. "Since she's set foot on campus, she's given it everything. Each year, she has tried to take her game to a different level."

Heilman said "speed and quickness" are Green's top physical attributes. …
