Commissioners Kill Plans for Pool and Fitness Center

A proposed Mt. Lebanon community and school aquatic center has been scrapped. Commissioners decided Monday night to notify the school board that the municipality would not help fund a proposed $11.6 million, 50-meter pool and fitness center.

The school board and commissioners had been trying to design a joint facility for the past several years.

To fund its portion of the project, four of five commissioners would have to approve a bond issue, which had been estimated at $6.5 million.

But Commissioners Barbara Logan and David Humphreys oppose the facility as proposed. Commissioners also decided against participating in a smaller, 25-meter pool project on the high school campus.

"We're missing a lot of good opportunities here," said Commissioner Ty Ely, who was a member of the pool planning committee. …
