Woman Convicted of Stabbing Murder in Granite City

GRANITE CITY * A jury returned a guilty verdict Friday against Breanna D. Maldonado, 20, in the stabbing death of a woman during a dispute outside a gas station here in 2013. Maldonado, of Granite City, could face a prison term of 20 to 60 years for first-degree murder when sentenced later by Judge Kyle Napp, and will have to serve all of it.

Officials said they determined that Maldonado and the victim, Kaitlin N. Juenger, 20, had connections to rival gangs. A Madison County Circuit Court jury in Edwardsville reached a verdict in a little more than three hours of deliberations.

Maldonado and two others were driving a man, 26, to a hospital for treatment of an injury, police said, when they stopped about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 6, 2013, at the Quik-Trip station at 2159 Madison Avenue.

An argument developed with others there and Maldonado stabbed Juenger, who was unarmed, before driving off. …
