A little over 15 years ago, Andrea Dasha Reich was planning a trip from New York to Miami when a friend who lived in Sarasota encouraged her to fly to Tampa instead and drive south, stopping for a visit here.

"The rest is history," said Reich, a painter whose work with resin has moved into sculptural forms. "Within four months we were here. I am a person of color, and the light drove me crazy. My studio is like a glass cage in the middle of the jungle."

Reich's work will be the focus of an exhibit opening Friday at Alfstad& Contemporary in the Rosemary District. Titled "Flying Colors," it will chronicle Reich's artistic evolution into "full- blown 3D, which is very new for me and I love it."

Reich's work has already had a three-dimensional feel to it, with layer upon layer of resin applied to the flat plane of the canvas. …
