Bogota Considers No-Cash Policy

BOGOTA -- Officials are considering instituting a no-cash policy for all of its borough departments that accept payments.

This means residents and other members of the public would not be able to pay for anything -- from taxes to recreational programming - - with bills or coins.

Borough Administrator Joseph Scarpa, who recommended the policy at the council meeting on Thursday, contended that the new policy would protect the workers who handle the transactions while also minimizing the possibility for corruption.

"It just eliminates any issues whatsoever," Scarpa said.

Scarpa emphasized that there is no suggestion that employees are taking cash illegally in Bogota, but he noted that it has happened before in other towns.

The administrator said the policy change also ensures the safety of employees who currently take large amounts of cash to the bank. …
