FAIR LAWN -- The Borough Council has adopted an ordinance enabling it to appoint a volunteer chaplain for the Police Department, and it has someone prepared to take on the position.

David Boone served as chaplain for more than 20 years while working in the Police Department. Boone, the senior pastor at Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church on River Road, retired from the department last year but wants to continue as chaplain.

"I loved being a police officer," said Boone. "I am really happy I can continue to serve as the chaplain."

Boone said he will be sworn in at the March 22 council meeting.

Over the years in the department, Boone said he has developed a close bond with his fellow officers and added, "I hope I can continue to serve for many years. …
