Former England player Tommy Banks, 86, slipped and fell after following his Welsh border collie, Susie, into woods at Blackleach Country Park near Walkden, Salford.

His family raised the alarm after he failed to return. As night fell and temperatures plummeted below freezing, Police Community Support Officer Derek Thomas found the pensioner with his torch and Tommy was saved.

Now Derek is to be handed a Chief Constable's Commendation for saving Tommy's life.

Tommy, who was a member of England's 1958 World Cup squad and made 250 appearances for Bolton Wanderers, described how he tried to crawl to safety but managed just ten metres in six hours. …
