Developer Ideas Being Sought for Newtown Site

SARASOTA

SARASOTA -- Developers will have the chance to submit their own ideas this spring for redeveloping the Marian Anderson Place site, the City Commission decided Monday afternoon.

The property along Dr. Martin Luther King Way, declared contaminated after an unauthorized landfill was set there in the 1960s, has long languished with little economic activity, and city officials have struggled to entice new development there.

Now city officials plan to invite developers to submit ideas for commercial, office or light industrial spaces that could be built on the site, according to city documents.

More than $1.4 million in tax-increment, sales tax and county funding is available to invest in infrastructure, utilities or financial incentives to a developer at the City Commission's discretion, City Attorney Robert Fournier told commissioners on Monday. …
