New Team Could Boost Tourism, Hotels in Area

The arrival of the Atlanta Braves in southern Sarasota County for spring training could spur tourism in a neglected part of the region, experts say.

While northern Sarasota County has seen dramatic growth in recent years, bringing the Braves to the West Villages could be a boost that the south needs to create momentum for other tourism-related projects, said Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County, the county's tourism promotions agency.

Haley cited a proposed 180-room resort-style hotel on 11.5 acres formerly occupied by the Venice Arena. The complex would both pay homage to Southwest Florida's circus history and put a destination resort near the beach.

If the Braves come to the area, southern Sarasota County will need more places to put fans, Haley said.

"This will give us something really big for that Venice, North Port and Englewood quadrant," the tourism chief said. …
