76-Year-Old Man Dies,wife Injured in Garfield Duplex Fire

A 76-year-old man died Friday afternoon in a duplex fire in Garfield, and three others suffered minor injuries, public safety officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched to a residence in the 5100 block of Kincaid Street about 1:30 p.m. and were on scene within five minutes, city public safety spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.

The man, who has not been officially identified, was dead by the time emergency responders arrived at the scene, Ms. Schaffer said.

A man who lived on the other side of the duplex, Michael Gay, 42, identified the victim as Robert Brown. Mr. Gay said he had lived in the opposite side of the duplex next to Mr. Brown for 12 years.

"He watched my kids grow up," Mr. Gay said.

Mr. Brown's wife was in the residence at the time of the fire, but she escaped with minor injuries. …
