The North County Transit Center in Ferguson is set to open Monday, and officials say as many as 8,000 people a day could use it for bus service.

It's the poshest such center run by Metro Transit, and includes digital display boards that show when buses are arriving, a free park-ride lot and a cafe slated to open this summer.

Outside, riders can wait under large shelters that will have around-the-clock security.

In addition to the opening, bus riders will see changes to 48 bus routes.

Officials on Thursday celebrated the completion of the $10.2 million center, of which federal funding paid for about 80 percent of the cost.

"A bus facility just took over a car dealership," said Ray Friem, executive director of Metro Transit, citing the building's past life as a Mazda car lot.

The transit center at 3140 Pershall Road can accommodate buses up to 60 feet and electric buses, which Metro plans to introduce to its fleet.
