Chancellor Angela Merkel faces an increasingly splintered political landscape after voters punished her party and lifted the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany to its best showing yet in three state elections dominated by the refugee crisis.

Support for Ms. Merkel's Christian Democratic Union tumbled across the board Sunday as her candidates failed to capture two western states including Baden-Wuerttemberg, home to carmaker Daimler AG. Her party hung on to win the most votes in Saxony- Anhalt in the formerly communist east, though Alternative for Germany, or AfD, upended the coalition math there by winning about 24 percent support in its first attempt in the state.

Pilots' mental health

LE BOURGET, France - French aviation officials on Sunday called for stricter international monitoring of the mental health of pilots and for guidelines that could require doctors to report pilots whose psychological condition might imperil public safety. The recommendations were part of a report by French accident investigators into the deliberate crash last year of a Germanwings jetliner by its co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz.

The inquiry found that doctors had prescribed Mr. Lubitz powerful antidepressants and sleeping pills in the month leading up to the disaster and that at least one urged that he be hospitalized for a possible psychotic disorder. But none of those physicians alerted the German aviation authorities or the airline about Mr. Lubitz's condition or his treatment for fear of running afoul of Germany's strict privacy laws - warnings that investigators said might have prevented Mr. Lubitz, 27, from getting behind the controls of an Airbus A320 and killing himself and 149 others.

Bacon paintings stolen

MADRID --Five paintings by British artist Francis Bacon worth more than $33.5 million were stolen from an apartment in Madrid, the El Pais newspaper reported Sunday.

The theft, one of the largest in Spain, took place in June, but had been kept secret by investigators. …
